Waste recyclers need to have environmental impairment liability cover yet it appears only a few are made aware of the exposure. Some hold Directors & Officers liability covers yet are unaware of the exclusion regarding pollution defence costs.

By way of a real example, a company that suffered a fire at their premises also suffered an environmental damage claim as the fire brigade poured water and chemicals to douse the flames, the chemicals ran into a local water source which consequently polluted neighbouring farmland - a risk that could have been covered by an insurance policy.

July 2010 - Charity news

In a recent prospect meeting with a small charity the discussions turned to their Travel Insurance arrangements.

The charity is involved with overseas funding and staff are sometimes asked to travel to less pleasant parts of the world.

Several staff have a personal annual travel policy and this is used for the business trips which could result in a massive uninsured loss - the cost of an air ambulance from Africa is not cheap and also if the traveller is taking charity property e.g a laptop, the personal travel policy may not cover the business equipment not owned by the insured person.

Also be aware that cover may not include non-scheduled flights or helicopter flights.

In a report published recently, it was stated that following three evidence gathering sessions and as part of an online consultation, numerous volunteers have reported grievances’ including verbal abuse and sexual harassment.

The report continued that evidence recounted - "shocking stories of bad management, bullying and improper behaviour" in the "not for profit" sector.

Charity decision makers must be aware that volunteers have the same rights as directly employed staff and expensive and potentially damaging actions could result.

In addition, charities must ensure that adequate charity trustees indemnity insurance extended to include employment practices liability insurance cover is purchased.

Low records of confidence in Charity finances

A recent survey, published earlier this month, records the lowest levels of confidence in charity finances for several years. Over fifty percent of senior managers who responded to the survey expected their financial situation to worsen over the next 12 months.

In a situation when reducing costs is vital, more financial decision makers are questioning the costs of their general insurances.

Insurance premiums can be reduced without decreasing cover by commissioning a competitive review of current insurance arrangements.

The review will include costings from alternative insurers often eager to acquire the business and therefore the exercise is likely to generate savings, but more importantly will ensure that current arrangements meet the charities' precise requirements in terms of cover and support from their insurance adviser.

Normally, an in-depth review will be undertaken at no cost to the charity.

July 2010 - Vehicle news
June 2010 saw the European parliament vote to include self employed truck drivers within the scope of the Working Time Directive for truck and bus drivers, which will mean that self employed drivers will be limited to 48 hours a week to include all aspects of the job.
In the past self employed drivers could spend up to 56 hours a week driving so long as they were not driving for more than 90 hours over a fortnight.
This will simply heap more pressure on the industry unless this decision is reversed by the European Commission
